This pair doesn’t have the bells and whistles of some of the models to follow, but it’s an incredibly reliable and reasonably priced entry point into the front load washer market. In fact, it’s so good we named it one of our 2 best laundry packages in 2013. (The other is the Electrolux featured below.)

Review: GE Front Load Washer – GFWS1500DWW

ge-gfws1500dww-review

Shown with optional pedestals.

The GE GFWS1500DWW is oriented toward efficiency: it has a speed wash for light loads, and higher internal water temperature to make every cycle faster. Faster cycles mean money saved on energy bills. Saving time and energy is a recurring theme, especially as we move up the price ladder.

We suggest the GFDS140EDWW dryer. The HE Sensor Dry feature maintains consistent heat and moisture throughout the cycle. The drum also reaches faster spin speeds, which … wait for it … reduces cycle time and saves you money.

Review: Maytag Maxima XL Front Load Washer – MHW7000AW

maytag-mhw7000aw-review

Shown with optional pedestals.

This is where we start to enter top-of-the-line territory for front load washers and dryers. The Maytag Maxima MHW7000AW (and matching dryer MED7000AW) covers just about everything you need in a luxury laundry unit. It has just about every cycle you can imagine, from delicate to bulky, plus special options for allergen care and static reduction in the dryer. Seriously: they thought of everything with this laundry set.

  • $1299 MSRP

Measurements

  • 4.3 cu.ft. washer drum capacity
  • standard 27″ width

Distinguishing Features

  • American Made (in Ohio)
  • Durable commercial grade components
  • Corrosion resistant springs and dampers
  • All-in-one wash and dry cycle:
    • Use this washer as an all-in-one washer dryer.

  • 12 hour fresh hold option circulates air post-cycle:
    • Prevents mold and foul smells until the door is opened.
    • Transfer your clothes to the dryer on your schedule, not the machine’s.
  • Advanced vibration control:
    • Minimizes noise.
    • Equiped with 2 ball-bearing balancing rings and 2 point suspension system.
    • Advanced software monitors the machine in real-time.
  • Allergen removal wash cycle:

The matching dryer has a few features worth mentioning as well. I’m a big fan of the Custom Refresh option – if you forgot to unload the dryer on time (oops), this quick cycle will restore clothes to that fresh-out-of-the-dryer state. Also, both units feature scratch- and shatter-resistant glass doors (among other commercial grade components).

Review: Electrolux Front Load Washer – EIFLS60LT

electrolux-EIFLS60LT-review

Shown with optional pedestals.

Electrolux is a highly dependable brand. Their EIFLS60LT front load washer received top honors in the category last year. It’s slightly larger than the GE featured above and we think it’s one of the the best looking washers. We recommend checking it out in person, as photos don’t do it justice.

It pairs with the EIMED60LT front load dryer, which has a whopping 8.0 cu. ft. drum capacity, fast/gentle/large load cycles, interior lighting, and a “My Favorite” feature to recall your most commonly used settings. The optional, removable drying rack accomodates shoes, delicates, and dry clean only items. It sits on the frame of the dryer without touching the spinning drum, so as the drying cycle runs your shoes won’t battle with the dryer. That means less noise, and less wear and tear on both your shoes and the drum of the dryer.

Review: Whirlpool Front Load Washer – WFW94HEAC

whirlpool-WFW94HEAC-review

If you’re considering a true luxury laundry unit, here’s why you should consider the Whirlpool WFW94HEAC front loader: it’s designed so that busy people can pay as little attention to it as possible.

First case in point: the washer can be used as an all-in-one washer and dryer. Select the Overnight Cycle and crawl into bed. By morning, your laundry will be washed, dried, and then lightly tumbled (yes, all night!) to prevent wrinkles. If you’ve ever waited to transfer a load of laundry to the dryer before going to bed, you know how seriously convenient this option is.

Second: the 12-hour post-cycle FanFresh option in the dryer (model WED94HEAC). This is an energy-efficient fan that circulates fresh air into the dryer after the main cycle is finished. Improved air circulation prevents wrinkles and mildew buildup, so you don’t need to rush to empty the dryer right when the cycle is finished – you can do it on your own time.

Pricing

  • $1399 MSRP

Measurements

  • 4.3 cu. ft. washer drum capacity
  • standard 27″ width

Distinguishing Features

  • American Made:
    • Designing, engineering, and assembling.
  • Vigorously machine-tested:
    • Buttons with 50,000+ clicks to simulate lifetime ownership.
  • “Precision Dispense” technology:
    • An outstanding clean
    • Use as little as a tablespoon of high-efficiency detergent
  • 4 in-drum baffle panels (the wings inside your dryer drum):
    • Compared to 3 on most other models.
    • Extra baffle panel “churns” your laundry better.
    • Flips and dries clothes evenly, no bunching or miscellaneous damps spots.

Conclusions

That’s quite a lot to consider, but hopefully you have a better idea now about what features you can expect to find within your budget. Any lingering questions? Feel free to leave a comment here, or ask us directly on Twitter.
