Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer
Is it Time for a DishDrawer? My Mother is getting on in age and her daily tasks are definitely starting to be an obstacle. One of which is loading and unloading her dishwasher. Seems simple, but if you are elderly and losing your balance along with other health concerns, it’s a big deal. These conditions actually interrupt her hand washing abilities as well. I went on a journey looking for a solution as she wants to keep as much independence as possible.
The Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer™
The solution I found is a perfect! The Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer is conveniently positioned at bench height for ease of loading and minimal bending. This is exactly what we needed for her. The product was first thought of in Mosgiel, New Zealand by a team of Fisher & Paykel engineers who took a closer look at the office filing cabinet and had a breakthrough moment. Drawers were practical, why not put a dishwasher in a drawer? They have single DishDrawer that is perfect for a small household like my elderly mother or a couple. The Double DishDrawer on the other hand is great for a larger household. The Double DishDrawer can operate independently so different wash cycles can run simultaneously or separately to accommodate a variety of loads.
With the DishDrawer you can keep loading dirty dishes while a wash cycle is underway. This also saves energy and water, allowing smaller loads without the guilt! A feature my mother loves is the knock to pause function. “Knock to Pause” helps if you miss a dish and need to add it after you started the load, which I could use with my teenage son! She on the other hand loves it for a different purpose.. She is using it to grab something she maybe put in “by accident.” Having dementia, she has a lot of confusion and sometimes she is stuck on an item that may be lost and she believes it very well could be in the dishwasher. I can’t tell you how many times she opens the drawer to make sure that item whatever it is, is not in there.
It’s the little things that make the biggest difference; knock and open is a very nice feature. She also loves that it is really the perfect size for her, when sink washing dishes got to be hard for her, she would always hate to run the dishwasher for just her little bit of stuff. She felt like it was such a waste. Now she doesn’t have to worry about that, this is the perfect size for a single person. The added space in the compartment since she has just a single DishDrawer is now a shelf, and very useful.
Time to Upgrade to the DishDrawer
Now that my Mother has her Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer™ and it has been such a good fit for her, I can see the double DishDrawer being my next upgrade. The two drawers are made to fit into my existing dishwasher hole so it will not be a major issue to change. I love the fact I can run them at different times if need be and they are deep enough for my pots. I know I will love the knock to open feature as my teenage son is constantly storing dishes in his room, and of course he brings them out when I have already started the dishwasher! Like, every time!!! They are also panel ready, so I will not have an issue with the transition.
If you fit the small household size and are willing to invest a little bit more, this is a great product. Another cool fact- the DishDrawer™ Dishwashers launched in 1996 in New Zealand and the product was debuted on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Since the debut it has been sold in over 50 countries. And you can feel confident in the purchase as Fisher & Paykel offers a 5-Year Extended warranty!
