Appliance manufacturers are always trying to come up with a product that fits the mold of what people want. In recent years many manufacturers have come out, or pushed their free standing front control ranges and have phased out their slide in ranges.
What is the difference? A freestanding front control range will have finished sides, the controls are on the front (there is no backguard panel) and it does not sit atop the counter. The slide in range sits over the counter, has unfinished sides, and also has the controls on the front.
Appliance manufacturers are starting to push free standing front control ranges because they are easier to install into a 30” opening. The issues that we are finding when it comes to installations is that when someone is replacing one slide in with another the width comes into play. The door is too wide, or the top that overhangs the counter doesn’t quite fit, and costly alterations are needed.
